A Day Dedicated to Cultural Landscapes  [08.07.25]

On 26 June 2025, a group of around 15 colleagues from our research department set out on a full-day excursion to the traditional orchards around Metzingen. Our aim was to experience firsthand the ecological, cultural, and economic significance of this unique cultural landscape.

Our first stop was the Glems Fruit Tree Museum, where, during a one-hour guided tour, we gained a comprehensive insight into the history and importance of traditional orchards. Topics covered included their origins, their role in today’s landscape, and the diversity of varieties, care practices, and quality-control measures for apple and pear trees. Historical methods of fruit processing—such as turning fruit into juice, cider, and apple wine—were also vividly demonstrated.

Next came a group walk along the so-called Pear Experience Trail at the foot of the Swabian Jura escarpment. Along the way, we learned how these orchards are managed today, the challenges involved in their upkeep, and how they are integrated into the Swabian Jura Biosphere Reserve. Individual fruit varieties and their special characteristics were also highlighted.

After a shared coffee break at the museum café, we made our way to the distillery Staßer in Dettingen, where we were given a fascinating look at the art of distilling high-quality fruit brandies. The guide clearly explained how traditional craftsmanship is combined with the use of locally sourced fruits from the orchards—including a small tasting of selected spirits.

The excursion offered a multifaceted perspective on the multiple functions of traditional orchards—from their ecological and aesthetic value to their role in regional food culture and their economic benefits. All in all, it was a successful day full of insights, interaction, and immersion in nature!
