A Farewell from the Department [16.01.26]
After more than 43 years with the department, we bid farewell to Maria Gerster-Bentaya, a colleague whose influence reaches far beyond projects, lectures, and responsibilities. Looking back on these decades, it becomes clear that what truly stands out is not only what Maria did, but how she supported and inspired the people around her.Colleagues and former colleagues alike remember Maria for her reliability, warmth, and steady presence. She consistently brought thoughtfulness, empathy, and clarity into every collaboration. Whether in teaching, supervision, consulting, or project work, she combined professionalism with a genuine human approach that made people feel seen, supported, and encouraged.
Many students and colleagues describe how Maria inspired them in lecture rooms and project discussions—not only to work better, but to work with heart. Her ability to create calm, foster creativity, and guide teams through complex processes made her a trusted mentor and role model. For many, she was someone they admired, relied on, and learned from deeply.
The numerous memories shared—from international projects and trainings to everyday encounters in the department—paint a picture of someone whose impact will continue to resonate. Maria’s laughter, mentorship, and positive energy have shaped both people and structures in lasting ways.
Maria, you will always be part of the story of this department.
With gratitude, warmth, and deep appreciation.
