Highlights from the trans4num China Research Trip   [26.09.24]

In September, the trans4num EU consortium visited the partner project in China to exchange ideas with local experts on sustainable agriculture. The trip included visits to Beijing and Inner Mongolia, focusing on topics such as nutrient management, soil health, and innovative agricultural models.

Arrival and first impressions
The research trip began with the consortium's arrival in China, where they landed in the bustling metropolis of Beijing. Some members of the consortium had already been to China earlier to attend conferences and visit project partners. After checking into the hotel, the group came together for a welcome dinner that focused on the bold flavours of Sichuan cuisine. This informal gathering set the tone for the days ahead, with some participants going to bed early due to jet lag, while others still had conversations about the programme ahead.

Conferences and discussions
The visit to the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) marked the official start of the programme. Presentations by various external guests, consortium members and Chinese hosts focussed on key topics such as nutrient management, soil health and soil degradation.
This was followed by workshops on trans4num research topics such as food system modelling and agent-based modelling. There were lively discussions about how these models could be applied to other regions and initiatives. The topic of stakeholder engagement was also addressed, with participants sharing their experiences from different countries and discussing both local and broader strategic perspectives for future consortium activities.
The following day continued with a workshop on Decision Support Systems (DSS). The consortium discussed possible integrations of these systems with other models. Bilateral meetings provided space for more in-depth discussions and further strengthened partnerships.
In the afternoon, the group had time to explore Beijing before preparing for the next leg of the journey to Inner Mongolia.

Inner Mongolia: Agriculture and partnerships

The trip to Inner Mongolia began with an early flight to Zhalantun. Upon arrival, participants were welcomed and greeted with presentations from European and Chinese partners, with a focus on soya bean cultivation. A highlight of the trip was a panel discussion with large-scale farmers who shared their insights into agricultural practices and the ongoing need for education in the sector.
The next day offered the opportunity to visit soya bean trial fields and learn more about agricultural progress in the region. Participants explored different tillage methods, variety trials and breeding programmes, gaining valuable insights into local farming practices and the future of agriculture in the region.
The group also visited a modern agro-industrial park where they learnt more about efforts to protect and conserve Inner Mongolia's black soil, an important resource for sustainable agriculture in the region. The day ended with a traditional Mongolian dinner, celebrating the successful exchange of knowledge and ideas throughout the trip.

Review and future collaboration

On the last day of the trip, the members of the consortium bid farewell to Inner Mongolia and returned to Beijing. For some, the trip extended into the weekend with final opportunities to explore the sights of the Chinese capital.
This research trip proved to be more than just a series of meetings and workshops. It was an intensive exchange of ideas, experiences and cultural insights based on a shared commitment to promoting sustainable agriculture. The collaborations forged during this trip will pave the way for future projects and ongoing co-operation.
